Day 1 Recap

August 11, 2009

In the scorching 90-degree weather, 10 teams came prepared for the heat and competition. The day started off with lots of sun, a slight breeze and free ice cream for all. The captains met and prayed, thanking the Lord for fellowship and holding off the rain.

The A and C league got off to a heated competition. Bethel came out with a 6-run lead over KCCC. And NCPC Chicago finished with just one run ahead of New Life.

In the B League, Living Grace was not able to attend, so Faith had a scrimmage game with its own team members. Faith’s captain, Jason, said, “It was an unfortunate forfeit.” He mentioned they had an unfortunate forfeit at the beginning of the season too, which gave them a 1-5 record for the season.

So with the forfeit, Faith advanced to the finals and awaited their final round at 5 p.m. “Our team’s preparing for the game and trying to keep morale high,” Jason said. “We’re all about having fun, and we’re here to have good fellowship.”

And prepare they did. They waited three hours to play and faced Evergreen in the final round, who had just won their previous two games. But Faith didn’t let that deter them. Nor did they get discouraged when they were down 8-1 against Evergreen. They kept trying and it paid off. Faith came out on top with 12 runs.

Soon after the first round of play, the clouds began to loom overhead, signaling the rain. It held off for a while, but by 3:45 p.m., just before the 2nd round games finished, the drizzle began and soon turned into steady rain.

But the teams in their resilience carried on with their games, vying to move onto week 2.

Bethel and Calvary didn’t stop for anything until the end—least of all the downpour that came throughout their game. It was Bethel’s first time in the softball league, and they played well, giving Calvary a tough match. Bethel was down by 6 runs going into the 7th and scored 5 runs. As described by Leonard, Bethel “had a chance to tie/win the game in the bottom of the 7th, but Calvary got the last batter to fly out and win 20-19.”

In the C League, NCPC advanced after winning against both New Life and Vineyard. The first game against New Life was really close and New Life almost won. But NCPC held on and went on to win 15-5 against Vineyard 2 hours later.

And after all the rain, sweat and dust, three teams prevailed and are on their way to day 2 of the playoffs: Calvary Red, Faith, and NCPC Chicago.
